When we talk ‘inflammation’ in skin care we’re talking about when a skin care treatment causes ‘injury’ to the skin for the purposes of rebuilding the skin. When done very aggressively it has it’s downsides!
Inflammation is your body’s perfect and excellent response to injury! Our hope should always be that our body can repair itself through the processes it uses that ultimately lead to inflammation which then leads to healing. When we are injured a whole host of processes begin to happen that are specifically designed to start working at the site of an wound to protect and repair our injury! The redness and swelling and heat at the site of an injury are all part of the repair process the body has begun! Our bodies are amazing at coming to their own defense. The more grievous the injury the more difficult for the body to repair without being overwhelmed and/or the longer it will take to heal and repair. For the most part we only need to get out of the way for our bodies to do their job unless it’s so severe we require medical intervention.
Inflammation as it pertains to skin care is where, in my opinion, there is a bit of a ‘gray’ area. For many decades there has been a pretty aggressive approach to changing skin or addressing skin conditions such as pigmentation or rough uneven skin. This approach may have caused more problems than it solved in some instances, treating pigmentation for example. We’ve peeled, abraded, scrubbed, injected and added all kinds of acids to beauty products in the pursuit of skin that’s changed. The bulk of this did more harm than good but we had no way of knowing that until now. The skin of the face, much like anywhere else on the body, had it’s own intuitive and intelligent repair mechanisms that we can overwhelm with the constant attacking of our barrier. And when we constantly attack our skin’s barrier we drive our skin into constant ‘repair mode’ and guess what’s neglected? The processes of skin’ renewal’ such as our our collagen and elastin replenishment and hydration for plump skin cells! When we do more ‘repair’ than ‘renew’ we are actually AGING our skin! This is approach is very counter-intuitive to slowing the aging processes in the skin! And I say slowing because aging is inevitable and we cannot escape it, even through skin care, but we can maximize our skin’s capacity to be vibrantly healthy which is true anti aging!
These discoveries of what we were actually doing to our skin are still fairly new and for some, revolutionary in that if we can’t peel or abrade our way to youthful looking skin, what do we do?
At Spa Joli Belle I practice what I refer to as ‘skin healthy’ skin care practices. In doing so I create change in the skin utilizing state-of-the-art products and devices that while effective, are not damaging to the skin and always working to preserve and support the skin’s barrier. I discovered this method of skin care about 6 years ago and was as astounded as anyone else in this profession to find that I did not need to use the ‘nuclear’ option on skin to truly create long lasting visible change in the skin of my clients and it completely reformed my skin care practices. Best of all…I see gorgeous results in the skin of my clients all the time! My clients who have taken this journey with me are constantly astounded at what we can achieve without traumatizing the skin and accelerating the very aging we’re seeking to slow down! It’s important that your skin care treatment gives your skin the support deep in the dermis after treatment to help keep it healthy while simultaneously encouraging the renewing and rejuvenating of the skin we see on the surface.
There is no doubt you can find the more aggressive treatments virtually everywhere. I encourage you to seek out information about alternatives to these aggressive approaches and see if there might not be an option that is both effective and skin healthy! Creating changes in your skin should require the least amount inflammation possible and always include a plan for supporting the reduction of any inflammation a skin care treatment may cause and jump-starting the skin’s support and nourishment!
At Spa Joli Belle we offer the option to book a Skin Care Consultation for $30 so that you can discuss what are the best options for treating your skin type and conditions with a skin care professional. We will deduct the $30 charge for our Skin Care Consultation when you have your first Facial! We would love the opportunity to be your guide towards having the skin you’ve always wanted and we’d love to introduce you a whole new way to get it! We also have a great handout at the Spa detailing the 4 phases of wound healing should you be interested in more information about how our body works to heal itself!
